Using the Site Directories


What is site Directory?

One of the basic methods used by webmasters is to gain greater visibility of their websites on search engines and draw more traffic is the use of web directories. Web directories are websites that specializes in linking to other web sites and categorizing those links. There are hundreds of thousands of web directories on the internet today. Among those, there are three major directories that webmasters use today. This includes the Google Apps directory, Yahoo! Directory and the Open Directory Project, or Dmoz. This article discusses the main three site directories and how the site directories work to build traffic.

The Main Site Directories:

  • Google Apps Directory:  Google Apps Directory adds user name and email address of your domain that is browsable and searchable. It can be shared with everyone in your organization. By default, Google Apps Directory includes user's primary email address and nicknames. As administrator, you can control sharing settings by adjusting directory, which will show the email addresses. You may also hide users from Google Apps Directory. However, suspended and deleted users do not appear in the directory.
  • Yahoo! Directory:  Yahoo! is the most popular and direct competitor of the Open Directory Project or Dmoz. In the past, the Yahoo! Directory submissions were mostly human-edited. However, in October 2002, Yahoo changed to crawler-based listings for its main results. Similar to Dmoz, Yahoo! directory offers the types of options, the standard option is basically a free account and a paid submission process that offers expedited review.
  • Open Directory Project (ODP) or Dmoz:  The ODP or Dmoz is one of the most popular web directories used by many webmasters today for the SEO campaigns. Directories Compared to Yahoo, ODP or Dmoz uses a hierarchical ontology scheme for organizing site listings. Listings on a similar topic are grouped into categories; smaller categories are include under the same group. 


How Site Directory Works?

1.  Selecting Incoming Site:   Site Directory provides a central location, where the administrator can view all websites associated with specific portal site, manage and allow access to them. Site administrators can see from the directory, portal to portal structure and individual sites. You can approve or reject new sites and site links and can edit or delete.

2.  View the Portal Structure:   Site directory opens the portal site home page, on the top navigation bar and click sites. By using site directory, you can see both the portal structure in any way. In his personal list of site collections and sites to see on the list toolbar, click Site Map. To view details of a site collection, to which they were last updated, including the time, click on the Quick Launch, click View All Site Content and View Individual Sites

3.  Edit Sites:   Similarly you can edit the site contents going to the site directory in the Sites Folder. You can use the pointer and select the portion of the content to edit. You can change the site name, site location, user information etc. However, you need to use the administrators access to manage permissions.

4.  Approve and Reject Sites:   Added by site administrators you can approve or reject sites. The sites are set to pending as required by a site administrator should be approved or rejected. In the site directory, click to View all Site Content, and then click the Sites Folder. Pointer to the site, and then click the arrow that appears. In the list, click Approve /Reject.

5.  Delete a Site from the Site Directory:   In the site directory, click View All Site Content, and then click the Sites Folder. Rest the pointer on the site that you want to remove from the directory, and then click the arrow that appears. On the list, click Delete Item, and a confirmation message appears, click OK.
